Where to play?
The Leicestershire Petanque Association has many venues throughout Leicestershire.  Visit the clubs page to find your local club.

Petanque can be played on practically any surface except grass which is not advised. Gravel or hard earth is the preferred surface. This is one of the joys of Petanque, and unlike other sports, elaborate pitches or courts are not needed.

A playing area of approximately 12 x 3 metres is sufficient for one piste although 15m x 4m is preferred if you have the space metres, and a surface, which is not flat but has character, with a general uneveness of bumps and indentations.  This, combined with a slightly loose surface of gravel or dust. to hold the boules, will tax the player's skill to the full.  A lot of playing skill in petanque is reading the terrain as well as your opposition.

A lot of new clubs when preparing terrains tend, if using gravel, to overdo the amount, a fault to avoid if you ever create your own terrain.  Best of all get out and about, look at and play on established terrains then decide which surface you prefer.
